Federally Regulated Testing

DOT Urine Specimen Collection

Fully compliant collections for safety-sensitive employees under 49 CFR Part 40. We handle the process so you stay audit-ready.

What Is DOT Drug Testing?

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) requires drug and alcohol testing for employees in safety-sensitive positions across regulated industries including trucking, aviation, rail, transit, pipeline, and maritime.

All DOT testing must follow strict federal procedures outlined in 49 CFR Part 40, which governs everything from specimen collection and chain of custody to laboratory analysis and Medical Review Officer (MRO) review.

The Collection Process

Every collection follows the exact federal protocol required by 49 CFR Part 40.

1

Donor Identification

We verify the donor's identity using a government-issued photo ID before any collection begins.

2

Federal CCF Completion

A five-part Federal Custody and Control Form (CCF) is completed accurately, documenting the collection event from start to finish.

3

Specimen Collection

The donor provides a urine specimen under controlled conditions that prevent adulteration or substitution, per Part 40 protocols.

4

Specimen Integrity Check

Temperature is measured immediately. The specimen is checked for validity indicators before sealing.

5

Split Specimen Sealing

The specimen is split into Bottle A and Bottle B, sealed with tamper-evident tape, and the donor initials the seals.

6

Laboratory Shipment

Specimens are shipped to a SAMHSA-certified laboratory via secure chain of custody for analysis.

7

MRO Review

A licensed Medical Review Officer reviews all non-negative results, contacts the donor if needed, and issues a final verified result to the employer.

Required Testing Circumstances

DOT regulations require testing under six specific circumstances.

Pre-Employment

Required before a safety-sensitive employee begins performing covered functions.

Random Testing

Unannounced, scientifically random selection from a pool of safety-sensitive employees throughout the year.

Post-Accident

Required following certain accidents or incidents involving safety-sensitive employees.

Reasonable Suspicion

Ordered by a trained supervisor who observes specific, articulable signs of drug or alcohol use.

Return-to-Duty

Required before an employee who violated drug/alcohol policy returns to safety-sensitive functions.

Follow-Up Testing

Unannounced testing following return-to-duty, as directed by a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP).

DOT 5-Panel Drug Test

All DOT urine tests screen for the following five drug categories as mandated by federal regulation:

1

Marijuana (THC)

Including CBD-derived THC

2

Cocaine

Cocaine and metabolites
